Amsterdam Lions

About Lacrosse > Dutch lacrosse

Lacrosse made its way to the Netherlands around 2000 and is growing explosively ever since.
Every year new teams are added to both the men’s and the women’s leagues.

The men’s competitions is divided into two divisions. In total there are 14 teams competing.

The women’s competition counts 7 teams for the season 2009/2010 and new teams are set up every year.

In the summer of 2008 a men’s and women’s delegation traveled to Lahti, Finland to participate in the European Championships 2008. The men surprisingly brought back a silver medal.

The women’s national team continued working hard in preperation of the Women’s World Cup 2009 in Prague. Here 16 teams battled for the medals. Four of our Lions were part of this event. Rosa Haker and Astrid Zwager enforced the defense of the "Freaky Deaky Dutch", Lillian Elekan joined as attacker of the squad and was also part of the management team with Alize Scheenstra. After 10 days of World Cup the ladies ranked 13th, the best ranked new squad!

The men are now a little over a year away from their World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester. It will be the biggest world cup ever with 31 countries competing. Here in the Netherlands preperations have begun, with a wide selection of men playing together in the "Orange Wave".
